Term 2 - Week 1 Place Value - Revisit

Place Value Houses
Place Value has been recognised as a school wide area we need to focus on.  Below is an animation to help you discuss with your child how we read numbers with the help of the "Place Value Houses".

Below is a link to the NZ Maths Exemplars showing the type of learning we will be moving on to.  Your child will be working within Curriculum Level 2-3.

Place Value Exemplars - NZ Maths

Today a group of us discussed "Decimals" as a part of place value.  Thanks to all the measurement we have been doing with the Garden to Table program, the children quickly grasped the concept of 0.5 being the same as a half.  We were then able to discuss tenths, hundredths and thousandths.  Here are some pictures of the children using Decipipes to assist their undersatnding with this.

Term 1 - Week 5-6
Multiplication & Division
Here are some useful animations to show different methods of solving multiplication problems.  They cover a range of different strategy stages fro 5-6.  This is to show some of the learning that will be happening in Room 4 over the next couple of weeks.

Below are 3 ways children can learn to learn to multiply larger numbers:
i - Doubling and halving
ii - Compensation
iii - Using place value/tidy numbers.

Some of the children will be learning these strategies to help solve larger problems.

Term 1 - Week 2 - Statistics
This week we will be beginning a short mathmatical unit on Statistical Investigations.  The children will learn how to group and organise category data and whole-number data and present it in an appropriate format, such as a tally chart or bar graph.  Here is a link to the NZ Exemplars which clarify what they should be able to do at Curriculum Level 2 - the Level they are working in.

Here is a really cool clip that helps explain the need for "Place Value Houses".

Maths Strategies for Addition
Each Week I will try and add some strategies based on what we are working on in class. Currently we are working on Addition and Subtraction

Below are some animations that illustrate how a child must be thinking to begin to move from "Counting on from the highest number" - (Stage 4), to "Part Whole Strategies"- (Stage 5) where numbers are manipulated to make addition easier.

1 - Bridging to ten - Part-Whole

We have also been using Number lines to help us understand how we move forward when we add, and backward when we subtract.  These animations are really helpful and discussing jumping up a number line in smaller chunks will really reinforce your child's learning from the classroom.  Notice how they jump to "tidy" numbers and use number bonds knowledge to help solve these.

2 - Open number lines

The next step is this final animation where double digits are subtracted using compensation.  Take a look.  Very cool.

I really hope you will find these helpful in supporting your child's learning.
